This time of year people are always talking about new beginnings and resolutions. These are great and I have my own that I am consciously involved in, but I think we often trivialize new beginnings, and forget that they generally mean a challenging of our old ideas, and a destruction of who we think we are and what we are about. This can be a very uncomfortable but rewarding experience.
Many times I have worked with people who were dealing with less than comfortable life changes. I often find that I return to the analogy of a baby chick growing in an egg.
When we begin a stage of life growth, the space we are moving into seems huge and expansive. It seems so big in fact, that we can not even fathom an end to it; we can not see any limitation! So, like the chick forming as the first few cells gathering and multiplying with a purpose in the egg, there seems to be no limit to that space.
However, by the time the chick is ready to hatch, the egg is a very small and confining world indeed! The chick becomes increasingly uncomfortable and constricted with every passing hour as life continues to unfold within it. Effortlessly it grows, despite it’s cramped conditions and obvious discomfort!
It is important to realize that the Chick has NO IDEA that there is a world out there beyond the shell. There is no concept of a ‘way out’ simply because there is no concept of OUT! So the discomfort continues to build until enough growth has occurred and then suddenly, when the chick is trying to shift around to find some relief, the shell breaks!
At first this is a scary thing; a complete paradigm shift! But breaking out of the shell is completely unavoidable and so after a little guessing and testing, the chick emerges into a brand new world that is so vast, it cant even fathom an end to it. . .
Much like the baby chick in the egg, we are often unaware that there is a way out of our discomfort simply because we are not aware that there is someplace outside of that discomfort. However, we as humans, have the advantage of being able to observe these patterns in life and in nature and we can use reason to apply them to our own lives!
Any time you are feeling discomfort of any kind, whether it be anger, sadness, fear or any other form of discontent, you have the advantage of this awareness. You do not have to suffer the agony of waiting for the frustration to build and overwhelm your constraints! You can recognize that you are pushing up against a shell that no longer fits the being that you are becoming. And with this awareness you can turn your attention towards breaking that shell and finding the world on the other side.
Have a Wonder Filled New Year
